Custom Website vs Template: Which Do You Actually Need?

Templates aren't evil — sometimes they're the smart call. Here's how to tell whether you need a custom build or a good template will genuinely do.

Custom Website vs Template: Which Do You Actually Need?

Not every business needs a custom website, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling one. But plenty of businesses outgrow templates faster than they expect. Here's how to decide honestly.

When a template is the right call

  • You're just getting started and need to exist online this week.
  • Budget is genuinely tight and every dollar matters right now.
  • Your needs are simple: a few pages, a contact form, done.

A good template on Squarespace or Shopify can look perfectly professional. There's no shame in starting there.

When you've outgrown one

Templates start to hurt when your business gets specific. The tell-tale signs:

  1. You're paying for apps and plugins to force the template to do something it wasn't built for.
  2. Your site looks like three competitors' — because it's the same template.
  3. It's slow, and you can't fix it because you don't control the code.
  4. You want a particular way of selling or booking, and the template simply won't bend.
A template shapes your business around the software. A custom build shapes the software around your business.

The long-term math

Templates are cheaper on day one and more expensive over years — in monthly app fees, in customers lost to a slow or generic experience, and eventually in the rebuild you do anyway. A custom site costs more up front and is built to grow with you. Neither is “better” in the abstract; the right one depends on where you are.

A simple test

Ask yourself: “Is there something core to how I run or sell that a template can't do?” If you can't name one, a well-built template will serve you fine for now. If you can — and it matters — custom is worth pricing.

Still unsure? Tell us what you're trying to do and we'll give you a straight answer, even if it's “a template's fine for now.” See how we build custom, or ask us.
