Website Speed: Why It Matters and How to Fix It

Website speed feels like a technical detail. It isn't — it's a business number. A slow site loses customers and search rankings simultaneously, and it does it quietly, every single day. Here's why, and what to do about it.

Speed and sales

People are impatient online. When a page is slow to load, a real share of visitors leave before it even appears — and they don't come back. Every extra second chips away at your enquiries and sales. On mobile, where connections are patchy, the effect is worse.

Speed and Google

Google measures real-world loading performance (its “Core Web Vitals”) and uses it as a ranking signal. Between two similar sites, the faster one tends to rank higher. So a slow site takes a double hit: fewer visitors from search, and fewer of those visitors sticking around.

Speed is the rare fix that improves sales and SEO with the same work.

What actually makes sites slow

  • Huge, unoptimized images — the number-one culprit by a mile.
  • Too many plugins and third-party scripts — each one is another thing to download and run.
  • Cheap or overloaded hosting.
  • Bloated templates shipping code the page never uses.

A practical fix-it checklist

  1. Compress and correctly size every image; use modern formats.
  2. Remove plugins and scripts you don't truly need.
  3. Put your site behind a CDN so it loads fast everywhere.
  4. Enable caching and text compression on the server.
  5. Build on a lean foundation instead of a heavy template.

Some of that you can do yourself; some needs someone in the code. Either way, the payoff is immediate — faster pages, more conversions, better rankings.
