Local SEO: How Small Businesses Get Found on Google

If you serve a town, city, or region, being found on Google for local searches is some of the highest-intent, lowest-cost marketing there is — those people are ready to buy. Here's how local SEO actually works, minus the jargon.

Start with your Google Business Profile

Your free Google Business Profile (the box that appears with your map pin, hours and reviews) is the single biggest lever in local search. Claim it, then fill in everything: correct category, hours, services, photos, and a real description. An incomplete profile quietly loses to a complete one.

Reviews matter more than you think

Reviews influence both your ranking and whether people click. The winning habit is simple:

  • Ask every happy customer — most say yes when asked directly.
  • Make it one tap (a short link straight to the review form).
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, like a human.

Get your details identical everywhere

Your name, address and phone number should match exactly across your website, Google, social profiles and any directories. Mismatches (“St” vs “Street”) confuse search engines and dilute your signal.

Use local language on your site

Name the places you serve, naturally, in your page copy and titles — “plumber in [town]” beats “plumbing services” for local intent. A page per key service and, if relevant, per key area, helps you rank for more specific searches.

Local SEO rewards the boring stuff done consistently: a complete profile, steady reviews, matching details, and clear on-page copy.

The on-page basics still count

All the usual foundations apply — a fast, mobile-friendly site, clear titles and descriptions, and proper structured data. If your site is slow or clunky, local SEO can only do so much. (Our speed guide covers the first fix.)

Give it time

Local SEO compounds. The profile, the reviews, the pages — they build on each other over weeks and months. Start now and it keeps paying off.
